2008 OCA Scholarship Applications

Washington, DC—OCA is pleased to announce that applications for the 2008 OCA Scholarship Program are now available online. Up to sixty $2000 scholarships will be awarded to incoming Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) college freshmen for the 2008-2009 academic school year.   OCA recognizes that scholarships and financial aid play an essential role in helping students achieve a college education.

2007 OCA DFW Annual Picnic

OCA annual member picnic was held on 10/28 Sunday at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve (6701 W. Parker Rd. Plano).  There were more than 80 members, family and friends joined this event.

Feed the Homeless 2007

OCA-DFW feed the homeless program on May 6, 2007 at Union Gospel Mission (UGM) of Fort Worth Homeless Shelter located at 1331 E. Lancaster Avenue, Fort Worth 76102.  We have more 40 OCA members and friends there.  This event has been taken place every year with the support by the Verizon group lead by Jeffrey Cheng and OCA-DFW Chapter Board.  China Town Buffet supported the program and prepared the food in the early morning. There were about 300 people enjoyed the lunch.

OCA National Center

OCA National Center had the ribbon cutting and dedication on January 12, 2007 in Washington DC.  This white Victorian building at 1322 18th street is owned by OCA.  In the front entrance, the names of contributors to the building campaign are inscribed.

 2007 CYLC Youth Leadership CAMP

CYLC Mission Statement

To provide direction, leadership and guidance while building confidence through enhancing communication and team building skills in aspiring Chinese American youth.  To prepare Chinese American young leaders for the main stream community and reinforce their pride in being Chinese American.

CYLC Camp Objective

To provide the youth a safe environment to build up friendships, cooperation, and social skills among group activities.  Through the activities youth should learn self discipline and communication skills to empower them to take responsibility for their behavior. Encourage youth for creative expression to find conflict solution, collaborate with peers, accountability and trust.  To strengthen their confident of goal setting and decision making through the camp activities and team-building.

CYLC date:   July 16th (Monday) to July 20th (Friday), 2007

CYLC location: Austin College – Sherman, Texas.   

Activities: 

Leadership Training – Self awareness, personal characteristic analyzing, team building, brainstorming, project designing, presentation skill, communication model, result evaluating, a thorough series of leadership courses and activities.

Group Activities Leadership workshop, team games, etiquette, physical activities, dance, music, arts and crafts, swimming, and talent show

Cultural Programs – Chinese painting, calligraphy, dance, and culture classes

 

Corporate Achievement Award 2006

Oct. 20, 2006 - Plano, TX      The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA), held its National Asian Pacific American Corporate Achievement Awards in DFW on Friday, October 20, 2006 at the Dallas/Plano Marriott.  The DFW community joined the celebration in the evening along with attendees from across the nation.  Honorees from across the country who received awards include:

Asian Festival

OCA-DFW joined the City of Plano Asian Heritage Forum on 5/6/07 at Plano.  Youth group promoted the summer OCA programs in this event.

OCA Annual Meeting / Picnic at Arbor Hill Park, Plano on November 3, 2007

During our annual picnic and member meeting on November 3th in Plano, candidates from various political parties joined us and encouraged friends and members of OCA-DFW to participate in the November election. Long-time members, current members, and new members met each other and networked. Past Presidents Henry Leung was attended. Special thanks to Linda Tran, Cecilia Leung, Henry Leung, Jun Zhang, Julie Hwang, Cindy Chao, Ansel Cheng and many other Board members and members of OCA-DFW to organize such a successful event and gathering.

 Aug. 10-13, 2006 - Philadelphia, PA      The OCA National Convention is the premiere event of the year for the Asian Pacific American community. Over the years, OCA National Convention has matured and evolved to meet the needs and demands of our members and convention participants. Our educational, leadership and outreach programs have helped enriched the lives of high school students, senior citizens, families, young professionals, new citizens and multi-generational families.

DETAILS Responds To OCA'S Rebuke Of "Gay Or Asian?" Article

On March 31, 2004, OCA received the following statement from Details Magazine. OCA believes this an unacceptable response. OCA had demanded that Details recall the April 2004 magazine, issue a formal apology to the APA community, and eliminate Whitney McNally's offensive Anthropology column from future publication.
